Battle of the Imports

August 2, 2008 provided many people in Sacramento , CA with hot weather as Round 6 of the Battle of the Imports was held at Sacramento Raceway this weekend. Some of the best racers and cars from the West Coast came out to the event to strut their stuff at the car show and prove who is the fastest on the drag strip. Full Function took the opportunity to bring out two of its shops cars, a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 owned by Bruce V., and a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 owned by Patrick B.

Bruce’s Evolution 8 was another one of those stock block “monsters” to roll out of Full Function making very good power on both pump gas and VP C16. The vehicle is armed with an AMS GT35R and all supporting modifications. Sean Burgess tuned Bruce’s Evolution 8 to an easy 360awhp @ 23 PSI on Full Function’s AWD Mustang Dynamometer. With the addition of C16 race fuel the car easily made 480awhp on race gas! This was all utilizing the factory reprogrammed ECU and Mass Airflow Sensor.

Patrick’s Evolution 9 was outfitted with a Full Function built 2.0 short block and Shearer GT35R Kit. Patrick also added a few new parts before going to the track which consisted of a Quartermaster Twin Disc Clutch with a Hydraulic throw-out bearing, an AMS/Wilwood Small Front Brake Kit, and 15x7” Rota Slipstreams wrapped in 26” Hoosier QTP Drag Slicks. Pat’s car currently makes an impressive 527HP on FFTEC’s Dyno.

The excitement started at the end of test and tune (TNT) held the day before BOTI. Highlights of the TNT include Bruce V. making his personal best of time 11.333 @ 126.388 mph while racing Patrick B. For those who were there to witness the race, everyone admitted that it had to be one of the best races of the night. Bruce had a better reaction time, which helped him get off the line first, but the additional power Patrick had enabled him to reel Bruce in and take the win.

During Test and Tune on Friday, Patrick started off doing partial runs dialing in the tune. The car has no roll cage and still has its full interior with no body modifications. Once the tune was dialed in Patrick felt ready to go all out and decided to take his first pass. He was able to pull off a run of 10.730@136.697mph. Upon returning to the staging area, everybody was confident Pat would get either kicked out or receive a warning. Surprisingly the pass went under the track officials’ radar. Pat decided to attempt another pass and found himself lined up against Bruce V. Patrick easily clicked off a new California state Evolution quarter mile time and trap speed record with a remarkable 10.682@135.485mph.

The next day, Pat and Bruce brought out their vehicles to compete in the BOTI drag racing event. Both Patrick and Bruce’s cars were put in the Street Tuner Class (S/T). During qualifying sessions, Pat ran 10.809@111.656, while letting off in 4th which already put him in the #1 spot in his class. When Eliminations started, officials told Pat that he was not allowed to run any faster than 11.49 due to not having the proper safety equipment. Patrick kept that promise by stalling off the line, thus being eliminated from the competition. Luckily, they opened up a TNT lane for people to run for a while, so Pat decided to go and make one last pass. On his last TNT pass, Patrick was able to pull off a 10.561@136.845 run, shattering the record he set the previous day.

While the crew was busy celebrating Pat’s record breaking run, Bruce’s consistent driving helped him climb the ladder during the Eliminations Round. Before we knew it, Bruce was already at the finals, where he eventually took first place in the S/T Class. Bruce walked away with $1100 in prize money and contingencies and a nice big trophy!

The BOTI weekend turned out to be extremely busy and eventful. Congratulations Bruce V. for winning 1st place in the S/T Class and setting a new personal best time. Congratulations to Patrick B. for setting a new California Evolution ET and Trap Speed record. We met several great people and competitors and we look forward to the next BOTI in Fontana .
